Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC)

Learn English, ASL and daily life skills to help you adapt to living in Canada.

Our experienced instructors provide free language instruction to culturally Deaf, oral deaf, deafened and hard of hearing adult newcomers to Canada to help you learn or improve your English language skills. 


What we offer

LINC is a free program funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada to teach you basic communication skills, how to read and write in English, and life skills to help you adapt to living in Canada.

Our LINC classes teach you:

  • American Sign Language (ASL)
  • English literacy: reading and writing
  • daily life skills, including:
    • banking
    • shopping
    • using the bus, subway, streetcar
    • going to the doctor
    • applying for housing
    • attending school
    • finding work
    • basic computer skills

Classes are taught using ASL and are offered Monday to Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

What is ASL?

American Sign Language (ASL) is the language of most Deaf Canadians. It a visual language made up of specific gestures (signs), hand shapes and facial expressions. It has its own unique grammatical rules and sentence structure.

Who is eligible for LINC?

Adults 18 years of age or older who are culturally Deaf, oral deaf, deafened and hard of hearing, including:

  • permanent residents of Canada
  • conventional refugees
  • some work permit holders
  • landed immigrants
  • some minister’s permit holders

How to register for LINC classes

LINC classes are offered at CHS locations in Mississauga and London. Contact the office near you to register or for more information.
