ASL Instructor Training

Do you want to become an ASL Instructor?

CHS is pleased to offer the ASL Instructor Training Series which prepares you to teach ASL using the Signing Naturally Curriculum Guide

  • The training is available in 5 parts, totalling 120 hours
  • You can take all or part of the training depending on what you need
  • Training is done through videoconference from a CHS office.  Offsite locations are available
  • Registration is open to persons who are Deaf or hard of hearing and fluent in ASL

Training Modules in 2020:

Part 1. Deaf Culture:  2 Fridays, January 17 and 31, 2020, 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM (12 Hours)

Registration Fee: $75  Registration Deadline: January 3, 2020

In this module, participants will learn how Signing Naturally incorporates culture and community as it applies to teaching ASL. Deaf people have distinctive ways of describing, valuing and behaving in the world.

 

Part 2. Linguistics:  2 Fridays, February 14 and 28, 2020, 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM (12 Hours)

Registration Fee: $75  Registration Deadline: January 31, 2020

In this module, participants will learn about the definition of a language, modality, phonology and more detail about non-manual signals, sign production/parameters and use of space and classifiers. All apply to the Signing Naturally curriculum.

 

Part 3. Signing Naturally Units 1-6:  4 Fridays, March 20 and April 3, May 8 and 22, 2020 (includes text book), 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM (24 Hours)

Registration Fee: $300 (includeds textbook)  Registration Deadline: March 6, 2020 

In this module, participants will become familiar with Units 1-6 of the Signing Naturally Teacher’s Curriculum Guide. Participants will be introduced to curriculum design, the lessons in Units 1-6, teaching strategies and evaluation.

 

Part 4. Signing Naturally Units 7-12:  4 Fridays, June 5 and 19, & July 10 and 24, 2020 (includes text book), 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM. (24 Hours) Pre-requisite Part 3.

Registration Fee: $300 (includes textbook)  Registration Deadline: May 22, 2020

In this module, participants will become familiar with Units 7-12 of the Signing Naturally Teacher’s Curriculum Guide. Participants will be introduced to the lessons in Units 7-12, storytelling, teaching strategies and evaluation.

 

Part 5. Signing Naturally Units 18-25:  8 Fridays, January 10 and 24, 2020 & February 7 and 21, 2020 & March 13 and 27, 2020 & April 17 and 24, 2020 (includes text book), 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM. (48 Hours) Pre-requisite Part 4. 

Registration Fee: $450  Registration Deadline: December 13, 2019

In this module, participants will become familiar with Units 18-25 of the Signing Naturally Teacher’s Curriculum Guide. Participants will be introduced to the lessons in Units 18-25 which emphasize students discussing life events in detail and giving presentations.  Participants also learn teaching and evaluation strategies.

Part 5 Dates for Summer/Fall 2020 are TBA. We will announce the dates in the early spring but the training will be held during the late summer and early fall 2020.
