Learn English, American Sign Language (ASL) and daily life skills to help you adapt to life in Canada

Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) supports Deaf newcomers through programming that provides opportunities to improve official language skills (ASL and written English) as well as life skills which support the individual’s successful social and economic integration in Canada. 

LINC is a free program for newcomers funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. 
Classes are taught using ASL, the language used by most Deaf Canadians. It a visual language made up of specific gestures or signs, hand shapes and facial expressions, with unique grammatical rules and sentence structure. 

Who is eligible?

Adults 18 years of age or older who are Deaf or hard of hearing and who are one of the following:

  • permanent residents of Canada
  • convention refugees
  • protected persons as defined in section 95 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA)
