Jan. 7, 2020 – TORONTO, ON – The Canadian Hearing Society (CHS) announced today their National Scholarship Program is now accepting applications. The scholarship program breaks down financial barriers for Deaf and hard of hearing students applying to or attending post-secondary institutions. The number of awards granted depends on the number and ranking of qualified applicants.

Successful applicants, who are full-time students, will receive a $3,000 scholarship award for the year; part-time students will be awarded $1,000. Returning students may be eligible to receive the award for up to four years. The funds can be used to cover tuition, residence or educational resources. For many recipients, receiving a scholarship is life-changing.

"There are no words to thank you enough for the opportunity to represent Deaf people and people with accessibility needs in diverse fields," says Esme Newling, a 2019 scholarship winner entering her second year of her program majoring in Anthropology and minoring in Forensic Science. “The CHS National Scholarship will be invested in new communication supports, including ASL classes and an interpreter for classes. It will also help ease the overall financial burden of post-secondary education.”

Submissions will be reviewed by a committee of Deaf and hard of hearing educators, business leaders and CHS staff. All winners will be notified by September 10, 2020 and recognized across the Canadian Hearing Society community later in the month.

The scholarship program was launched in 2017 with it’s main objective to reduce financial barriers for Deaf and hard of hearing students applying to or attending post secondary institutions.
