75 years proudly serving Deaf and hard of hearing communities

CHS 1940-2015

This year, the Canadian Hearing Society marks a significant milestone: 75 years of proud service to the Deaf and hard of hearing communities. Over that span, CHS has developed new programs and services to best meet the needs of the communities we serve. Our work has helped spur positive changes in technologies, attitudes and legislation.

Over 75 years, CHS’s national advocacy initiatives and partnerships have furthered, and continue to further, the organization’s goals of removing communications barriers and promoting equity for all its consumers.

Together, CHS and their supporters have:

  • Successfully advocated for the official recognition of American Sign Language (ASL) as a language of instruction in the classroom for Deaf education.
  • Successfully lobbied the Ontario Government for 10 years with the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association and the Canadian Association of the Deaf (CAD) for the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).
  • Established, with the Ontario Association of the Deaf, the first province-wide sign language interpreter service in Ontario.
  • Intervened in the landmark legal battle “Eldridge v. British Columbia,” with the CAD, and the Council of Canadians with Disabilities, where the Supreme Court of Canada unanimously ruled that people who were Deaf are entitled to equal access (via interpreters) to medical attention as hearing people.

Each of these accomplishments has improved the quality of life for people who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
