Where we can help

When the exchange of information is crucial and complex, the most effective way to communicate with a person who uses sign language is through a professional sign language interpreter.

CHS interpreters are professionally trained in sign language and knowledgeable in the language and culture of both Deaf and hearing people. They provide communication in American Sign Language (ASL)- English, or la langue des signes québécoise (LSQ)- French.

Sign language interpreters are invaluable when a Deaf person is:

  • at a job interview
  • at a medical appointment
  • in a business meeting
  • arranging a mortgage
  • reporting a crime
  • giving evidence in court
  • in crisis in a hospital, shelter, police station, etc.

When to use Video Remote Interpreting Services (VRI)

When on-site interpreting is not available, VRI services may be an option.

VRI enables Deaf and hearing people in the same room to communicate through an interpreter who is located off-site via videoconferencing technology. Trained CHS interpreters provide service from private and secure individual suites.

When to use a Deaf interpreter

In cases where a deaf person has limited communication skills or uses non-standard American Sign Language (ASL) or gestures, it may be necessary to use a Deaf interpreter.

A Deaf interpreter is a Deaf individual with fluency in ASL and/or LSQ who has interpreting experience. A Deaf interpreter works together with a hearing interpreter to facilitate communication between a deaf person and a hearing person. Learn more about Deaf Interpreting
