Q: What does the Literacy and Basic Skills program do? What is it for?

A: Impact-ASL provides deaf, deafened and hard of hearing adults with training that enables them to be more employable. It is designed for those who use English or ASL as a second language. The program focuses on literacy, numeracy, and pre-employment skills with American Sign Language (ASL) as the language of instruction.

A: The Impact-ASL Program is offered:

Daytime - Full time during the day Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 3:30pm
At Night - Part time during the evening, Tuesday evening from 5:15pm to 8:00pm

Q: Who can join the Literacy and Basic Skills program?

A: Deaf, hard of hearing and deafened adults between age of 18 and 64, with job related goals, who want to learn or improve their ASL as well as develop basic English skills.

The program is also open to Landed Immigrants, Refugees, Permanent Residents, Canadian Citizens, and those with a Visitor’s Visa.

A: The program teaches ASL and Deaf culture, English and math, critical thinking and problem-solving, using TTYs (teletypewriters/text telephones) and computers, personal daily-living activities, using community resources (e.g. Banks, shops, public transportation) and prepare for employment
