Position: Lifeskills Literacy Instructor, Workforce Literacy
Location: Toronto Region
Start Date: January 3, 2012
Minimum Start Salary: $47,113 per annum
Position Status: Permanent; Full-time; 35 hours per week

POSITION SUMMARY:

Implement the Workforce Literacy program, helping deaf adults to learn Essential Skills and Workforce Literacy. Act as an instructor in classes for deaf adults.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct Service:

•    Assist the program co-ordinator in interviewing and assessing learners
•    Prepare and provide lesson plans in relation to learner needs in order to develop literacy skills, life skills and communication skills
•    Assist with research and develop materials for class instruction
•    Adapt materials/curriculum to match learner needs
•    Teach classes in employment literacy, communication, social skills, literacy, math and deaf culture and community awareness
•    Apply or transfer classroom instruction with community trips or projects
•    Provide special assistance for learners in need, when required
•    Work with learners to promote independence within the community
•    Act as intermediary when required to assist with communication in relation to program needs
•    Provide appropriate back up in the absence of other staff
•    Consult with Coordinator in relation to learner progress and planning
•    Other duties as assigned

Administration:

•    Initiate and maintain accurate learner reports, attendance records and files
•    Prepare timely lesson plans according to learner needs in consultation with
Coordinator
•    Collect, prepare and distribute materials in relation to curriculum development
•    Assist Coordinator to schedule basic skills/literacy classes - follow up on correspondence and phone calls from learners, parents, general public and other referral sources including government and agency contacts as required
•    Maintain internal (CHS) and related statistics and monthly reports
•    Maintain and provide summary client reports when required
•    Provide confidential client information in accordance with Freedom of Information Act
•    Other duties as assigned

Community Education:

•    Advocate for accessibility and accommodation with external contacts
•    Act as CHS representative and provide information about program services at external workshops/seminars as required
•    Prepare and participate in workshops/support groups/seminars for consumer communities in relation to deaf culture and related issues as required
•    Participate in community events and special events as required, e.g. May Month, United Way Campaigns, etc.
•    Act as a resource and provide information about CHS and related services

Professional Development:

•    Acquire and maintain ASL proficiency requirement for the position (Advanced-Plus)
•    Attend internal staff meetings
•    Attend and participate in workshops/seminars related to position
•    Keep up-to-date on issues and information related to position and agency


LINE OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Reports to Manager, Employment Services and Workforce Literacy, Toronto Region

QUALIFICATIONS:

•    Bachelor’s degree in Adult Education or equivalent
•    Two to three years related experience
•    Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
•    Proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) and strong understanding of Deaf Culture and ASL as a second language issues
•    Working knowledge of various teaching styles with adults
•    Good organization and time management skills
•    Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Internet
•    Local travel for field trips; occasional out of town travel for training etc.
•    Demonstrated sensitivity to working in a culturally diverse environment
