Position: INTERPRETER – LSQ
Location: Ottawa
Start Date: December 12, 2011
Minimum Start Salary: $33,866 per annum ($56,444 per annum pro-rated to 60%)
Position Status: Temporary Contract to December 7, 2012 Part-time; 21 hours per week

POSITION SUMMARY:

•    Provide language interpretation between culturally Deaf, oral deaf, deafened, hard of hearing and hearing individuals or groups in a variety of settings
•    Act as resource for community development and liaise with related consumers. 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct Service:

•    Provide interpretation between la Langue des signes québecoise and French using differing forms of visual/gestural communication in a variety of settings including internal and external assignments
•    Travel to and from assignments
•    Prepare for assignments through research and consumer consultation
•    May act as a mentor/guide for students (intern) placement
•    Provide appropriate back up support in the absence of other staff

Administration:

•    Assist with administrative aspects of delivering service depending on regional requirements
•    May prepare/assist in preparation of Request and Statistics forms including accurate match of invoices, cheques, and send appropriate information to Head Office
•    Provide related Ontario Interpreting Services information via correspondence, telephone queries, and walk-ins including fee for service information when required
•    Book assignments when required and negotiate fee for service
•    Follow up with interpreters and freelancers in the community
•    Maintain accurate records and statistics in relation to hours of work, travel expenses, number of consumers, as required

Community Education:

•    Prepare and present workshops to consumers and community groups on interpreting services
•    Liaise with the deaf community to determine and respond to service needs
•    Advocate for accessibility
•    Answer telephone/TTY calls requesting interpreting information
•    Educate consumers on appropriate role of interpreter
•    Participate in community events and special events as required, e.g. May Month, United Way, etc.
•    Represent CHS on internal and external committees
•    Promote CHS and interpreting services through newsletters, promotion and external networks

Financial Management:

•    Responsible for filling out travel expenses for timely submission

Professional Development:

•    Attend all department and agency staff meetings
•    Keep up-to-date on relevant legislation and trends
•    Acquire and maintain LSQ proficiency to the level required for the position
•    Attend freelance and Ontario Interpreting Services meetings
•    Attend professional workshops and conferences related to position

LINE OF RESPONSIBILITY:

•    Reports to Regional Director, Ottawa

QUALIFICATIONS:

•    Post secondary diploma from accredited interpreter training program (College Boreal, L’Université du Quebec a Montréal (UQUAM), CEGEP du Vieux Montreal).  A relevant combination of academic qualifications and direct interpreting experience may be accepted in lieu of a diploma from an interpreter training program
•    Proof of professional screening Junior, Intermediate or Senior level from a Quebec interpreting agency
•    Excellent language skills over the continuum from la Langue des signes québecoise (LSQ), both receptively and expressively
•    Proficiency in English and ASL or willingness to learn
•    Able to maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to the professional code of ethics
•    On-going professional development and training in various areas such as code of ethics, skills enhancement, Deaf culture awareness, etc...
•    Excellent judgement, maturity and ability to effectively manage stress
•    3 years interpreting experience
•    Excellent creativity, customer service and analytical skills
•    Willingness to travel and access to a vehicle
•    Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
•    Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Internet
•    Demonstrated sensitivity to working in a culturally diverse environment
