POSITION SUMMARY:
To oversee the day-to-day activities of the finance department of The Canadian Hearing Society, with emphasis on general accounting processes, and to provide budget support through the implementation of financial controls and the coordination of internal/external reporting systems.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Direct Service:
• Oversee the general accounting process including the preparation of financial statements and reconciliation of the G/L
• Monitor the production of monthly financial reports and consult with Regional Directors and department managers
• Monitor/perform appropriate internal financial controls
• Supervise the compilation of the annual CHS audit
• Produce monthly CHS agency financial report and analysis for the CFO
• Supervise general accounting staff on a daily basis
• Coordinate preparation of year end audit working papers
• Coordinate funder audits and financial reviews
• Assist the CFO with special projects and special reporting needs as required
• Provide budget support to all areas of the organization
• Actively participate in enhancing management information systems
• Develop, implement and maintain an accounting education course for CHS managers.
• Provide basic accounting training for RD’s, managers and Senior Management as needed
• Coordinate compilation of CHS consolidated budget
Administration:
• Update and maintain office files as required
• Responsible for photocopying appropriate information
• Initiate and respond to correspondence as required
• Advise and train management staff in relation to fiscal, budgetary and administrative matters
• Develop and provide reference materials for financial planning resources
Financial:
• Responsible for development and management of Financial Services Department budget
• Authorizes expenses for Financial Services employees.
• Responsible for purchases made by the department (computers, etc.)
Supervision:
• Provide ongoing supervision to assigned department staff through regular meetings, performance reviews, appropriate feedback and active motivation of all staff as a team
• Problem solve internal conflicts on a daily basis
• Provide management of staff following CHS policies and procedures and Union Collective Agreement
• Recruit, supervise, discipline and terminate department staff in consultation with the CFO
• Provides training to managers and staff throughout CHS
Community Education:
• Participate in community events and special projects (e.g. Maymonth, United Way campaigns, etc.)
• Assist VP and management staff in preparation of other community projects as required
Professional Development:
• Attend internal staff meetings
• Attend and participate in workshops/seminars/continuing education courses related to position
• Keep up to date on issues and events related to the position and the agency
• Achieve ASL proficiency to the level required for the position (Advanced)
LINE OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Reports to the Vice President and CFO
QUALIFICATIONS:
• University Degree in Accounting CGA/CMA/CA
• 3-5 years related experience including supervisory, coordinating various financial cycles and meeting strict cyclical deadlines
• Computer/software – Microsoft Office Applications, General Ledger & Financial Analysis software including MAS90 and FRX
• Excellent judgement and decision making skills; high levels of complexity in relation to daily problem solving skills and initiative
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for extensive contact with managers agency-wide, funders, etc.
• Excellent written skills (English); French an asset
• Proficiency in ASL or willingness to learn; LSQ an asset
• Evenings or weekends as required
• On occasion may travel to regional offices or attend meeting/training offsite
