Position: SLS Coordinator
Location:

Marketing Communications, Toronto

Start Date: Immediately
Minimum Start Salary: $45,284 per annum
Position Status: Permanent; Full-Time; 35 hours per week

POSITION SUMMARY:

Coordinate, schedule and administer the content development of ASL and LSQ material. Provide message equivalency and direction for on-camera (video) ASL and LSQ Deaf interpreters. Appear on camera (video).

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct Service:

•    Coordinate and schedule Deaf interpreters for ASL and LSQ content development; and develop special contracts with external businesses to develop ASL and LSQ content specific to their requirements
•    Contract qualified Deaf interpreters for the ASL and LSQ on-video talent
•    Ensure message equivalency in the production
•    Ensure quality control
•    Administer on-going project meetings
•    Provide instruction and guidance for Deaf interpreters in relation to prescribed materials and general assistance; including training and message equivalency
•    Recruit and train Deaf interpreters/ASL and LSQ talent; verify qualifications
•    Market and promote sales of ASL/LSQ content development and products
•    Provide presentations about accessibility and Deaf culture, etc.
•    Active member of CHS’s Marketing Communications Team – for standards and development
•    Other duties as assigned

Administration:

•    Answer incoming calls, faxed and e-mailed inquiries or correspondence regarding portfolio
•    Correspond with external contacts to set up special contracts
•    Keep accurate records and statistics in relation to budgetary items such as contracts, expenses and rental space; keep accurate records and statistics in relation to the development of ASL and LSQ content
•    Provide reports to manager and funders as required
•    Update and maintain DI resource files
•    Maintain, review and process invoices
•    Maintain ASL and LSQ content development files, equipment, bookings, etc.
•    Maintain departmental forms and confidential files
•    Other duties as assigned

Supervisory:

•    Supervise all freelance Deaf interpreters that are contracted to produce ASL and LSQ content on video
•    Provide ongoing support and feedback to DIs,  with respect to quality of performance (pace, message equivalency, register, audience, appearance, etc.)
•    Follow up with the DIs with respects to consumer complaints and feedback, special incident reports, etc.
•    Supervise program volunteers as required; including assigning tasks

Financial: 

•    Process revenues from ASL/LSQ products and special contracts and submit to Financial Services
•    Process invoices and/or Journal Entries for projects
•    Track departmental expenses and revenues for manager as required

Community Education:

•    Develop information and provide public awareness through workshops and presentations about ASL and LSQ content development and CHS
•    Provide community advocacy
•    Participate in community projects and specialized campaigns e.g. United Way, May Month, etc.

Professional Development:

•    Attend internal staff meetings
•    Attend and participate in workshops/seminars related to position
•    Keep up to date on issues and information related to position and agency
•    Acquire and maintain ASL requirement for the position (Superior)

LINE OF RESPONSIBILITY:

•    Provincial Program Manager, Marketing Communications

QUALIFICATIONS:

•    Bachelor’s degree in ASL Studies or equivalency (e.g. post secondary education in related fields such as Deaf Interpreting, Adult Education and ASL Instruction, etc.).
•    VISTA/Signing Naturally Certification; Deaf Interpreter training an asset
•    2-3 years related work experience as a DI; and in sign language content development and message equivalency (e.g. English and ASL)
•    Excellent marketing skills
•    Native language fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)
•    Able to work independently and as an integral member of a team
•    Excellent communication and facilitation skills
•    Extensive understanding of Deaf culture and Socio-linguistics of ASL and LSQ
•    Demonstrated sensitivity to working in a culturally diverse environment
•    Evenings/weekends as required
•    Regular local travel; occasional out of town travel
