Immigrants to Canada often have trouble pronouncing the full range of words and sounds that make up the English language, so imagine how much harder it is for those with a hearing loss.  The Canadian Hearing Society offers a program which helps deaf, deafened or hard of hearing immigrants or new Canadians adjust to the English language and communicate more effectively.

Offered through the Speech-Language Pathology service, it uses many natural methods for teaching spoken English, English grammar, vocabulary, and the language of Canadian culture, all of which are needed to converse in common situations in everyday Canadian life.

English For New Canadians is especially popular among professionals, such as lawyers, engineers and business people, who need to communicate more effectively in their workplace.  If you have a hearing loss and English and ASL are not your primary language, you do have the option of learning English through someone who understands your needs and abilities.

Getting Started

If you're interested in taking English For New Canadians sessions, we'll first set up two meetings with you.  The first meeting will be for getting to know you and discussing what you want to achieve.  The second meeting will be an assessment to measure what you need and to outline goals and a plan of action.  Upon establishing a plan of action we can then proceed with the sessions.
