Regional Information Officer

Location: Kitchener/Guelph
Start Date: Immediately
Minimum Start Salary:

$18,100 per annum ($36,201 pro-rated to 50%)

Position Status:

Permanent; Part-time; 17.5 hours per week

POSITION SUMMARY:

  • Provide outreach, information and education to the public and consumer support networks regarding hearing loss, accessibility and other issues
  • Coordinate regional volunteer services.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct Service:

  • Field all regional external requests for information via incoming calls, correspondence (mail, fax, e-mail) and walk-ins
  • Provide appropriate general information regarding CHS services and related topics
  • Determine appropriate CHS person to respond to in-depth requests and re-route accordingly
  • Manage and monitor inventory of CHS information pamphlets and other materials
  • Develop, research and maintain regional information materials including pamphlets, displays and the resource centre
  • Assist users of resource centre
  • Coordinate media requests and campaigns
  • Produce and edit bi-annual regional newsletter
  • Identify priority needs for volunteer services within CHS regionally
  • Responsible for recruitment, placement and training of volunteers for regional activities
  • Monitor and supervise and prepare work for volunteers in conjunction with CHS service departments
  • Develop and coordinate annual volunteer recognition plan
  • Up-date information on the regional website
  • Other duties as assigned

Administration:

  • Maintain statistics/reports about nature, volume and geographic nature of regional information requests fielded by all regional staff
  • Maintain mailing lists for membership, newsletter, volunteers, etc.
  • Maintain and update resource centre and related materials, including cataloguing system
  • Select, order and collate books, materials, videos and other resources for resource centre
  • Coordinate volunteer requests with recruitment agencies/groups
  • Maintain volunteer files and statistics in relation to volunteer services
  • Provide program reports (e.g. budgetary, statistical summaries) as required
  • Prepare evaluation tools to be implemented for presentations in the community
  • Keep a sign out schedule for information services equipment for the office
  • Other duties as assigned

Community Education:

  • Coordinate and participate in providing community displays, presentations and workshops
  • Act as a resource and provide in-service training to other agencies, professionals and groups
  • Represent CHS at various health fairs and information sessions
  • Promote and provide information through media and publicity campaigns about CHS and its services
  • Advocate for accessibility in the community
  • Assist with, promote and participate in special events and fundraising activities
  • Liaise with volunteer organizations and promote volunteer opportunities for culturally Deaf, oral deaf, deafened and hard of hearing persons
  • Create presentations and cater to the needs of participants
  • Textnet: Support new users as requests by head office.
  • Implement user training of Textnet software program as requested

Professional Development:

  • Attend internal staff meetings
  • Attend and participate in workshops/seminars related to position
  • Keep up-to-date on issues and information related to position and agency
  • Acquire and maintain the ASL Proficiency requirement for this position (Intermediate Plus)

LINE OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Reports to Regional Director, Waterloo/Peel Regions

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, related social services or equivalent
  • 2-3 years related work experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Internet
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) skills or willingness to learn
  • Demonstrated knowledge of deafness and hearing loss
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to working in a culturally diverse environment
