About the OIS Day Service

The Ontario Interpreting Service (OIS) provides two sign-language interpreting services: the Day Service and an After-Hours Emergency Service

The Day Service operates from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.  The After Hours Service is for health and mental health emergencies only and operates from 5 p.m. to 9 a.m. weekdays and 24 hours/day on weekends and holidays.

The OIS Day Service provides quality OIS-registered sign-language interpreters in a variety of life settings, such as: medical/health/dental, mental health/counselling services, social services, employment settings, educational, legal, personal business, and government services.

What Languages Are Offered?

Interpreters provide communication in both American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English.  Services in Langue des signes québécoise (LSQ) and spoken French are also available in some areas.

Who Can Use The Service?

The service is useful wherever there is a need for communication between someone who uses sign language and someone who does not.  Signers can be deaf, deafened or hard of hearing.

Interpreters are fluent in ASL and English or LSQ and French and are sensitive to both hearing and Deaf cultures.

Deaf Interpreters may also be used if a Deaf person uses signs that are particular to a region or age group, has minimal or limited communication skills, has had his/her communication hindered or altered because of sickness or injury, or uses non-standard sign-language or gestures.

Interpreting services are arranged on a first-come, first-served basis.  Emergency services are the exception and take priority.

Where Are Interpreting Services Needed?

Some examples of settings where sign-language interpretation is required are:
  • Medical / Health / Dental
  • Education
  • Mental Health / Counselling Services
  • Legal
  • Social services
  • Personal Business
  • Employment
  • All Levels of Government Services

Who Pays for the Service?

Organizations, businesses, government and service providers, including hospitals, are responsible for the cost of making their service accessible and are charged a fee for service by OIS regardless of who requests the interpreter.
