POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for planning and providing communication services to deaf and hard of hearing individuals and their families/caregivers. To screen, assess, and provide ongoing client and group treatment in relation to communication disorders.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Direct Service: - Liaise with other professionals (internal/external) and agencies to determine service needs and action plans in relation to current and ongoing development of the program
- Target client population for treatment and determine communication needs of target groups in consultation with the Manager
- Interview and assess client communication needs using appropriate tests and procedures
- Design, prepare, and provide curricula/long-range treatment plans in relation to specific client requirements
- Seek funding support for clients through external contacts, networks, and other agencies
Administration: - Initiate and follow-up on correspondence and telephone calls from clients, general public, and other referral sources including government and agency contacts
- Maintain internal (CHS) statistics and reports
- Provide administrative information in accordance with government policies, e.g. Freedom of Information Act
Student/Staff Supervision: - Design practicum placement experience for students
- Provide training and supervision for students/volunteers in direct service activities
- Provide training, guidance, clinical supervision and monitor workload for Communication Disorders Assistant
LINE OF RESPONSIBILITY:
- Responsible to the Manager of Aural Rehabilitation/Speech-Language pathology/Hearing Care Counselling, Toronto Region
QUALIFICATIONS: - Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology
- Must be a registered member of CASLPO
- Three to five years related experience
- Demonstrated experience in English as a Second Language (ESL)
- Proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) skills or willingness to acquire proficiency to the level required for this position; French/LSQ assests.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Auditory-verbal therapy (AVT)
- Demonstrated excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
- Demonstrated ability to work under time pressures
- Demonstrated tact and maturity
- Demonstrated sensitivity to working in a culturally diverse environment
