POSITION SUMMARY:
Provide confidential language interpretation in La Langues des signes Quebecoise and French between culturally deaf, oral deaf, deafened, hard of hearing and hearing individuals or groups in a variety of community settings.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide confidential interpretation between La Langues des signes Quebecoise and French using differing forms of visual/gestural communication in a variety of community settings.
  • Regular communication with the OIS Assignment Coordinator in order to set up assignments; and as appropriate communicate post-assignment if necessary
  • Responsible for filling out and the timely submission of travel expenses

LINE OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Regional Program Manager, Ottawa

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post secondary diploma from an accredited interpreter training program (College Boreal, L’Université du Quebec a Montréal (UQUAM), CEGEP du vieux Montreal). A relevant combination of academic qualifications and direst interpreting experience may be accepted in lieu of a diploma from an interpreter training program.
  • Proof of professional screening Junior, Intermediate or Senior level from a Quebec interpreting agency.
  • Excellent sign language skills over the continuum from La Langue des signes Quebecoise (LSQ) to French, both receptively and expressively
  • Able to maintain strict client confidentiality and adhere to the professional code of ethics
  • Excellent judgement, maturity and ability to effectively manage stress
  • Willingness to travel and access to a vehicle
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to working in a culturally diverse environment
