Position: HR ASL Instructor
Location: Kingston
tart Date: Immediately
Minimum Start Salary: $20,891 per annum ($41,782 pro-rated to 50%)
Position Status: Permanent, Part-time; 17.5 hours per week

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

•    As part of the Human Resources department teach ASL classes, specialized ASL classes and administer placement tests and tutorials for CHS employees.
•    Develop and adapt materials for instructional and assessment purposes, including videoconferencing format.
•    Assist with coordinating ASL/LSQ classes for CHS employees and assist with contracting ASL/LSQ instructors as required
•    Provide support/training to same outsourced freelance ASL/LSQ Instructors as required

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct Service:

•    Teach ASL Immersion classes for CHS employees in Toronto and in the regions; 20% of time is allocated for classes and tutorials for the staff of the Satellite region.
•    Conduct placement tests and provide tutorial services to CHS employees
•    Maintain, adapt and distribute to students the necessary program resources and supplies (instructional materials, student materials, handouts, blank CD’s, adapted materials for tutorials, etc.)
•    Set-up and troubleshoot program technology (videoconferencing courses, DVD materials, LCD projectors, ELMO, etc.)
•    In collaboration with SLS, assist in the coordination and development of the annual resource CD for the program using updated information (classroom PowerPoint presentations, forms, etc.)
•    Provide training, support and guidance for freelance instructors in relation to prescribed materials and general curriculum/program assistance as required.
•    Actively participate in the SLS Team Meetings
•    Other duties as assigned

Administration:

•    Answer incoming calls, emails, etc. regarding the program and appropriate to the role
•    Complete and submit program forms and paperwork processes
•    Coordinate space and technology for classes and tutorials, etc.
•    Maintain, review and process freelance instructor contracts and pay as required
•    Provide activity reports to the manager as required
•    Keep accurate and confidential student records
•    Provide feedback about the program to the manager and HR for future planning and improvement purposes
•    Other duties as assigned

Community Education:

•    Participate in presentations and displays related to CHS clients and services
•    Participate in community events and special events as required, e.g. May Month, United Way Campaigns, etc.

Professional Development:

•    Fluency in ASL proficiency is a requirement for the position (Superior); attend and participate in workshops/seminars related to teaching ASL and to the position
•    Attend internal staff meetings
•    As directed, participate and act as CHS representative on related external committees
•    Keep up-to-date on issues and information related to position and agency
•    Acquire and maintain proficiency in LSQ

LINE OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Manager ASL Proficiency Program, Kingston (Human Resources)

QUALIFICATIONS:

•    Two year diploma in Adult Education or related field, or equivalent
•    Certification as Signing Naturally Instructor, Levels 1-3
•    Minimum 5 years experience in ASL instruction, classroom management
•    Extensive knowledge of Deaf Culture and Socio-Linguistics of ASL
•    Prior experience in coordinating/providing training and training resources
•    Excellent interpersonal, networking and communication skills
•    Excellent organization and information coordination skills
•    Ability to be creative and to adapt learning materials to needs of students
•    Demonstrated maturity and tact
•    Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Internet
•    Fluent in American Sign Language. LSQ an asset or willingness to learn
•    Prior experience with providing training using various technologies including videoconferencing, videophone, ELMO, LCD projectors, digital camcorders, developing PowerPoint presentations and recording DVD’s, etc.; and ability to set-up various program equipment and troubleshoot technical difficulties
•    Demonstrated sensitivity to working in a culturally diverse environment
•    Light lifting e.g. boxes of materials, small program equipment, classroom set-up, etc. required for onsite and offsite instruction
•    Valid drivers license and access to a reliable vehicle; regular travel to Toronto and within the Kingston Region; occasional travel to other regional offices in Ontario
